Find A Wii

The challenge: Find a Wii. The Nintendo Wii is the hottest game console on the market, and — it’s sold out everywhere. So how do you find yourself a Wii? It’s not as impossible as you think…

Eternal Wii Shortages - Why Is Finding A Wii So Hard, Anyway?

The Nintendo Wii was first released November 19, 2006 and it immediately sold out everywhere. Apparently, Nintendo simply didn’t realize their console would be so popular, and so they didn’t manufacture enough of them.

But the thing is, it’s been over a year now, and it’s still not available anywhere. Why hasn’t Nintendo been able to get their act together and make enough Wiis to meet demand?

Good question. Many people believe they’re purposefully dragging out the shortages in an attempt to make the Wiis look more in-demand and popular.

Why Does Everyone Want The Wii?

The Wii has topped CNet’s list of most wanted tech products for months in a row. Thousands of shoppers nation-wide are desperately trying to get their hands on one. Without a doubt, Nintendo’s game console is the “it” item of 2007 and 2008.

What makes it so special? Sony and the Microsoft both packed faster processors and sharper graphics into their latest PS3s and Xbox 360s. But Nintendo chose to break all the rules. Their console isn’t the most powerful console on the market, but it is the most fun, and it invariably makes people stop and say, “Wow,” when they first see it.

The most talked-about thing about the Wii is the Wiimote. Acellerometers in the remote controller detect movement in all different directions. If you’re playing tennis in Wii Sports, you swing it like a racket and your in-game racket matches the movement perfectly. In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, you can wield it like a sword to battle bad guys.

The Wiimote makes video games — traditionally complicated and most popular with young men — simple and fun-packed enough for everyone of all ages.

My Nintendo Experiences - Hugely Fun And Enjoyable!

I’ve played a number of the new motion-detecting Nintendo games, such as Wiis Sports and The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess. They’re all a complete blast. My favorite one is still the Tennis, though.

One thing’s for sure: There’s a reason Nintendo’s been so much more successful than Sony and Microsoft: Its just a whole lotta fun.

How Does One Find A Wii?

Despite the shortages, it’s perfectly possible to get your hands on one if you know where to look. The following tips should hopefully give you some ideas about how to go about finding one:

  • Use the WiiTracker service to track stores with in-stock Wiis. Wiitracker.com maintains a list of stores and posts notices as soon as one of them gets a new shipment of Wiis in. Other similar services include Outastock and Weebly.
  • Buy one used. Yes, there are actually people lucky enough to have one of these things who also want to sell it. Yeah, I don’t get it either. If you’re considering taking this route, be sure to read How To Find A Wii Used (And In Good Condition!).
  • Call every store in the country every day, and ask when they’re getting new shipments in. Sure, this may not seem like a terribly fun way to spend your weekend, but it’s what a lot of people are doing. I think there are easier ways, but it could certainly work if you do it.
  • Spend time exploring tiny, out of the way video game stores as opposed to giants like Wal-Mart or Circuit City. The less competition from other shoppers, the better.
  • Whatever else you do, if you do somehow manage to find one, buy it immediately! Don’t waste time thinking about it. If you do, you run the risk of someone else coming along and steal it out from under you. You don’t want that to happen, do you? I didn’t think so.
  • Win a free one! I don’t know anybody who’s won any Wiis, but I do see ads everywhere for contests. If you see one that you think you have a legitimate chance of winning one of these contests, go for it!
  • Pray. Hey, it can’t hurt, can it? Some divine intervention may be just what you need in your hunt to get your hands on the blessed thing.

Where Should You Start Your Search? Try One Of These Websites…

Here are links to two sites online where you can find Wiis in stock right now:

  • eBay, everybody’s favorite auction website, has well over a thousand listed at the moment - although not all of those are from trustworthy sellers, of course. Be sure to check a seller’s feedback rating before you decide to buy from them (and read through this eBay Buyer Safety Tips tutorial as well).
  • Amazon.com, the number one e-commerce website on the internet, has dozens new and used listed as I type this, all “like new” from 5 star sellers and all for good prices.

Good luck!

I hope your search for the world’s coolest game console is successful, and I hope you find the information in this article helps you somehow. Good luck!
