Firefox Skins

Is your browser looking a bit 2006? It doesn’t have to! Download a Firefox skin and learn how to pimp out your browser.
What is a Firefox skin? And why would anybody want one?
Firefox is a fully skinnable web browser. This is a feature that Internet Explorer does not have, so if you’re still using IE, you’re out of luck.
What does “fully skinnable” mean, anyway? It means that every aspect of the browser’s appearance and user interface can be changed with ease. Skins are attractive redesigns of the browser that you can easily download and install.
You’ve probably seen the default theme - grey and old-fashioned. Many people like the way it looks and find it perfectly satisfying. But I’m not one of them, and if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re not either. It’s just boring.
There are many much better options. Below you can see two screenshots of how installing new skins can affect the look and feel of the browser:

- Abstract Classic - This is one of the most popular themes around, and it has an abstract, glassy sort of appearance with big, vibrant blue buttons and gradient-shaded toolbars. Love it!
- Vista Aero - Do you like the look of Microsoft’s new Internet Explorer 7 browser but still want to use Firefox? This skin makes the browser look just like IE7 — or at least brings it darn close to looking just like IE7.
- Pink Paula - This one is… pink. Really really pink. What else can I say? People do seem to like it though, so there you go. Is pink your thing? You’ll like this one then. Otherwise … try something else.
- Blue Ice - This one is super cool, and is currently one of the top 20 themes on Mozilla’s website. Icy-blue buttons and simple toolbar designs give it a special, clean look.

How To Download And Install A New Skin
It’s easy to ditch your old default theme and replace it with something more stylish. Just jump over to addons.mozilla.org and follow the following steps:
- Click on the “Themes” linkon the left side of the page, right under “Browse.”
- Find the theme you like the best. You can browse through them by what kind of theme you want — like a nature, sports, or retro theme. Or, if you like, you can check out the most popular or the most recently added themes.
- When you find the one you like most, click on it to visit it’s page, and then click the big green “Install Now” button. You’ll probably have to click through the dialog that pops up asking you to confirm.
- Restart your browser. Voila - the new Firefox skin will now be activated. Cool, huh?
Yes, it’s that easy! And with so many beautiful themes to choose from, there’s absolutely no reason to stick with the default.
Where else can I find Firefox skins? Surely not just on Mozilla’s site?
No, Mozilla’s website isn’t the only site online with downloadable skins, although it is the biggest, with the largest number of skins available.
Another favorite is Customize.org. I’ve downloaded several of their Firefox skins and was really pleased - it’s a great resource.
